This is a very difficult diet. The key foods are whole grains, vegetables, beans and sea vegetables(sea weeds) and soy foods. You should eat fresh produce that is grown in your local areas. This means that if you live in the north east you would not be eating banana or pineapple as these do not grow in your area.

Dairy products, red meat and poultry are not recommended.

There are certain ways to cook macrobiotic foods, pressure cooker, steaming, boiling, pickling and pressing. Avoid sauteing, stir-frying , deep frying, baking and broiling.

Foods are balanced according to yin and yang. Vegetables are more yin and tamari soy sauce is more yang, for example.

Macrobiotics avoid many of our favorite condiments like mayo, common salt and wine vinegar and instead use ginger, Gomashio, daikon, roasted sea vegetable powder and umeboshi plums.
They also do not eat white flour, alchohol, soft drinks, processed foods, butter, margarine, canned veggies or fruits, eggs, sugar or fructose, molasses, chocolate or dairy products.

They prepare veggies by scrubbing not peeling.

A typical dinner would consist of: Miso soup, presure cooked brown rice and aduki beans , boiled turnip greens, quick cucumber pickles, nishime vegetables, and grain coffee or bancha tea.

This really a way of life as most do yoga and try to close the gap between humans and the natural world by living in harmony with with our invironment. Organic veggetables and grains keep us from ingesting the pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.

There are many books on this subject and very interesting. You may want to change your eating habit after you read these even if it is only to incorporate a few recipes in your present diet.
